It had taken hours to find and purchase the perfect gift. No store or item had been enough to match the grandeur of the occasion at hand.
Ah, then I found it. I purchased a gift bag of her favorite color then hunted down a store that sold matching tissue.
Finally, the moment had arrived when the perfect present would be in her hands. I sighed deeply and walked over, magenta colored bag in hand. The moment I had been waiting for, watching her open the perfect gift.
I handed it over and tried making eye contact but to no avail.
I pulled a smile to lighten her mood. “Hope you like it.”
She fished out the specially chosen gold-flecked tissue paper and threw it into my hands. “Mmmhmm.”
I folded my hands over the crinkly stuff and watched. “Okay. Alrighty.” The teenage angst monster was rearing one of its ugly heads once more.
She looped her manicured finger around the small, metal contraption. “What is this?”
“It’s a coffee maker. You can use it when you’re thirsting for a bursting…” She tilted a perfectly shaded eyebrow.
“I know you get hyper when you drink the stuff.”
The ride home would have been entirely silent had I not filled it with millions of questions. Her answers were usually “yup” and “nope”.
What had I done wrong? After arriving home feeling exhausted and used I made a vow to myself: I would not be spending money on her ever again, ever.
Yet, somehow my conclusion didn’t feel quite right. I was called to something higher.
The only problem was, I was not at the point where I could love my “enemies” and do good to them without expecting anything back. Why was that?
According to the mentor I met with later that day, I had not allowed myself to be filled to overflowing with the love of my Heavenly Father.
If I allowed myself to be filled with that love I could withstand any hurdle standing in my way, in this case: rejection.
Sounds great in theory, doesn’t it?
Thankfully, my mentor gave me a practical way to approach my problem. I was to find scriptures about the Father’s love and dwell on them.
Here’s what I found:
A) He will provide clothing, food and drink for you.
Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? –Matthew 6:26
B) God loved us when we hated Him. With the knowledge of His love for us and His power (brought about by spending time with Him) we must do the same for others.
But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. –Luke 6:35-36
C) You have NO reason to be afraid about ANYTHING. You’re God’s child! He will take care of you, despite the awful things that happen in our world.
For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. — Romans 8:15-16
D) God will give us good gifts, just like a good Father gives His child good gifts.
Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” — Matthew 7:9-11
E) We were filthy, disgusting and miserly. We, like swine, took delight in wallowing in filth and rot. God adopted us despite this. He wanted us. He wants us despite the mistakes we make.
How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! –1 John 3:1
Please, take some time to reflect on those verses and listen to the music I have posted below. The lyrics will further acquaint you with the most powerful Being in the Universe. He is the One who commands storms yet listens to each one of your thoughts, no matter how juvenile you may think they are.
If you dwell on how much your Father loves you and allow it to permeate your being, a deeper understand of your Father’s perfect love will cast out any and every irritation towards mankind.
It will leave you with nothing but peace, joy and life abundant <3
Wishing you the best,
