I am a model, yes. Do I model for Victoria Secret? Bahaha! Heck no. I am not 5,8 and shaped like a skinny hourglass. I am 5,5 and refuse to hop over the lines of obsessive and cut Cadbury from my diet. Nuff said.
That aside, I understand a little bit about the ins and outs of the photo editing but not a ton, especially when it comes to the largest modelling industry in the biz. Despite my insufficiency to speak on this topic I recently read an enticing article by someone who does.
The author of the trending post used to work for Victoria’s Secret and tells us she “left for ethical reasons.” She confirms something we all have all been told but have a difficult time believing: the team at Vic’s Secret edit the living daylights out of these girls.
But even more so than we think…
According to the article, models body parts are swapped for another parts. This makes for the “perfect” woman. Yeah, perfectly unattainable by anyone living under God’s bright sun.
Also disturbing, but for many different reasons, models know their bodies will be edited anyway so they will show up to shots with hairy armpits. Ultimately, those hairy armpits are edited once more to a perfect shade due to the fact that armpits always show up grey in photos.
She also tells us, models would wear push up bras under their swimsuits, only to have editors, like herself, edit the supports out. This leaves ample cleavage that has been given exception over the pull of gravity and is “impossible” to attain.
And that is the photo we, the public, see clogging up the internet and plastered all over billboards.
My friends, please do not look to social media to shape your definition of beauty and do recognize yet another thing: those behind the lens are trying to make a profit. They do not care about the well-being of those who are in front of the lens or the computer screen, watching.
In light of this, I bet you to please guard your eyes, mind and heart. Whenever you are at the grocery store and see an airbrushed photo please remember: that is not reality. You are the reality. Your life is what is going to make a difference. You have a voice. You are not defined by the sum of your parts. You are VALUABLE and have a very special place in this world.
Yes, it can be super tough to be set apart in this way, especially when you see other girls getting so much attention for the way they look. Just take a peek at Instagram and see that this is true. Trust me, I have had conversations with them and a majority of them feel empty in side. They are only filled when others approve of them.
That does not sound like a satisfying way to live, at all.
Please, allow your worth to be defined by a worth that far exceeds the perfect photo. You have gifts, talents and abilities that are different than anyone else’s but beyond that: your Heavenly Father is jealous for You.
We hear that a lot so I am going to give you a bit of a visual. Take time to remember the most jealous you have ever seen someone over someone else (or look a good, clean jealousy video up on Youtube). Now, amp that x’s 1000000000. That’s how jealous He is over you.
Yep, God is crazy over you even if Instagram doesn’t explode when you post a selfie.
With that being said, I want to hear your voice! What do you think about this Photoshop business? Do you think Victoria’s Secret should change their campaign to empower women? How do you think this could happen?
I love and covet your comments! Please leave them below <3
